Internationalisation and Notanant

In the light of repeated requests, Notanant is becoming multi-lingual. Site administrators will be able to easily add language variations of any content they create, and users will be able to switch instantly to the language of their choice.

Internationalisation and translation are often difficult elements for a site designer, particularly in large content-managed sites where content is changing dynamically. In fixed sites designs, it is possible to use a 'multi-tree' approach with separate sites and pages for different languages. However, in dynamic sites where all users need to be able to access information, maintaining the different language forks can be difficult, particularly as menu structures change and where aspects such as images change between language.

Notanant takes a different approach, allowing site owners and administrators to create alternate language pages for all content areas allowing a single site design to hold all the content, then dynamically switching menus and content according to the language preference of the visitor. Where content is unavailable in the chosen language, the page will graciously revert to the original language of the website. This ensures that the website content is held consistently and provides for a better user experience.

At this stage, Notanant itself is being translated into five languages and user and administrator pages will slowly be extending the range of languages available. As with the evolutionary development of the Notanant system, these changes are being phased in from now.
