Alt Tags

An "Alt tag" is a small piece of text used to provide information about an image where the image is not seen, or which can be seen when the mouse cursor hovers over an image. Alt tags are seen as a very important requirement for accessibility for people with low vision, particularly those using speech browsers. They also help where images are switched off in the browser settings, or where the page is slow to load (for instance where someone is on a dial-up connection).

Creating Alt Tags:

When uploading a image into the image library if you fill in the caption option this will then be used as the alt tag. Instead of the usual %%image= code you will get something like this:

%%Image[captionhere]=X123_123_image.jpg

This is then pasted into a page as usual and the alt tag within the square brackets is editable at anytime. You can also add in an alt tag to an existing image without having to reload it. Just enter in the caption and square brackets into the image code:

%%Image=X123_123_goldfish.jpg

%%Image[Goldfish]=X123_123_goldfish.jpg
