General tips & tricks

Some design tips and tricks on how to make the most out of your template.

Firstly, each template has it's own Tips and Tricks page in it's template section, this is just an outline of a few best practices and general bits of advice.

  • A site is only as good as it's content, with this in mind be selective over your content, keeping paragraphs concise and neat. Use bold, larger fonts and underlining sparingly - it will have more impact - too much and the content will seem as if it is shouting rudely at readers.
  • Alignment and consistency are really important, especially when it comes to colours and images. Try to keep images a consistent width and to match their colour with the templates colour. If in doubt a black and white image will always stand a high chance of looking good.
  • Consistency with heading types and spacing is also very important. Generally an H3 Heading type will work well as a separator in amongst the items on a page.
  • Be watchful of the height of the page, try to minimise unwanted gaps and keep your content in view when the page loads. You may need to delete paragraph breaks and replace them with line breaks (ctrl-Enter) to keep text looking good.
  • Don't go over board with colours! a good design will generally have a 70-20-10 colour ratio, 10 being the accent colour, mixing a few accent colours can work well if kept to a small set. For example blue and green highlights with a very occasional yellow (like on the logo perhaps).
